What is Education For?

What is the purpose of your education? Why have you devoted so much of your life to it? In this class, we explore opposing ideas about the aims of education. Should education instill authoritative ideas about truth, or free the person to create their own truth? Should schooling equip students with skills, and if so, should those skills promote individual success or serve social ends? Does it only reproduce social norms, or does it have the power to change society? We examine these questions in regard to our own education as well as in relation to efforts to promote schooling worldwide.
