Community Engagement: Yoga Prison Project

KLPA 1500

KLPA 1500, Prison Yoga Project is a course that explores how yoga, mindfulness, and reflective writing foster sangha—a supportive learning community—across differences, through a collaborative partnership between UVA students and a local women's prison. Incarcerated women and UVA students engage in contemplative practices and community writing to develop listening, self-awareness, relationship skills, and civic engagement while experiencing the connections between contemplative practices, self-awareness, and community literacy. These experiences will demonstrate how contemplative approaches can strengthen equitable partnerships and deepen learning both within and beyond the classroom.
